Disclaimer: I was invited to do a review of Canaca. My food was complimentary, choices were my own and the following review is my own personal opinion of the restaurant, food and my experience.

An array of dishes including a chargrilled wrap, Nasi Goreng, Chicken Teriyaki Noodles, Chicken wings and Thai Green Curry from Canaca World Street food restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne

Imagine a place with street food from around the world, I mean literally! From KFC and I mean Korean Fried Chicken of course, to a massive 12 inch Greek Gryos or if you are feeling saucy, perhaps a delicious Chicken Katsu curry!

Intrigued?

Allow me to introduce to you, Canaca, a vibrant spot smack in the middle of Newcastle Upon Tyne, just off Northumberland street at the bottom of Saville, filled with your street food desires.

You are greeted with vibrant interior decor, very street art like yet cosy with upbeat music, and an open kitchen where you can see your food being freshly made. I don’t know about you, but the sound of food made in a wok with high heat or on a chargrill makes me drool, you know the food will be good, the way it should be.

Bag yourself a table (this corner above is a personal favourite), and head on over to the till to check out the menu. Friendly waiter and waitresses are around at the till or if you are lucky, lookout for Mark or Habeba, they will be delighted to explain the menu to you.

Or… allow me to show you what’s on the menu!

Start off with the chicken wings, get your hands dirty and tuck in! Chicken is tender, cooked very well coated in thick sauce which has a mix of slight heat and tangyness to it. It will be a messy one but worth it, plenty of napkins, don’t worry.

Move on to the wraps, and these beauties are delicious. Had both the Chicken Gyros and Syrian Shawarma wrap. Both are very well priced and great for eating in and on the go. With the Gyros, you get chunks of chargrilled chicken which is still moist, and you get that yummy chargrilled slightly burnt taste that you want, mixed with Tzatziki and lettuce wrapped in soft Pitta. The Tzatziki is not too garlicky either and don’t forget, you can customise your sauce ratio, just let them know, easy peasy.

The Indonesian fried rice has chicken mixed in with vegetables and I sense a bit of fish paste coming through and being honest with you this is not quite there for me but it has a nice kick to it and my friend seem to enjoy it (or you could have it as an accompaniment with another protein dish).

Or opt for their Thai Green Curry with Jasmine Rice (or with noodles if you prefer). The Rice is soft and fluffy, and the curry with good chunks of chicken and the sauce has got a good kick to it with a touch a sweetness coming through.

One of my favourites has to be their Chargrilled Chicken Teriyaki Noodle. actually, I can recommend all the Chargrilled, they cook it soo well! You can taste the ‘char’ on this chicken giving that umami flavour especially mixed in with the Teriyaki sauce! Yummmm

And of course, a classic Japanese Chicken Katsu Curry. Think the picture speaks for itself.

And if you’re dining alone, you could try the ginger Katsu Chicken noodles with a session of an adult colouring book. I love these books, it’s like being a kid again and somehow destresses you, don’t you think? And yes, Canaca supplies them.

And Parents, bring your kids as well, they have childrens books at hand and a baby changing room as well.

Do you know what’s even more exciting? They are expanding their menu to include Korean Bimimbap *squeal* and it has a vegan option too!

Bring your friends and children, come in after Uni or work, indulge with a spot of people watching and do as the locals do – eat and cheers!
