hidden gems, foodie adventures & travel guides

MALAYSIA

Malaysia is Southeast Asia's underrated gem. Everyone flocks to Thailand and Vietnam (both brilliant), but Malaysia offers incredible diversity, their beaches, rainforest, modern cities, traditional villages, and some of the best food in Asia.

Plus it's easy to travel. English is widely spoken, infrastructure is good, it's safe, and it's more affordable than Western countries while offering genuine Southeast Asian experiences.

I've explored Langkawi and experienced Malaysia's mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures. The food alone is worth visiting from nasi lemak, roti canai, laksa, char kway teow and so much more! Malaysia's food scene is world-class.

Quick Malaysia Travel Tips

Visa: Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free. Easy entry requirements.

Money: Malaysian Ringgit (RM). Cards widely accepted. Very affordable destination.

Language: Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) is official language. English widely spoken in cities and tourist areas.

Transport: Domestic flights cheap between cities. Buses comfortable and affordable. Grab app works great.

Food: Malaysian food is incredible - mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences. Halal food widely available. Hawker centres have cheap amazing food.

Religion: Muslim-majority country. Dress modestly when visiting mosques. Respect local customs.

Safety: Very safe for travellers. Low crime rates. Solo travel, including solo female travel, is generally safe.

Islands: Langkawi, Perhentian Islands, Tioman, Malaysia has gorgeous islands without Thailand's crowds.
