I watched my best friend get married in the exact spot where Anakin and Padmé fell in love in Star Wars, well almost.
Ttechnically the wedding was at the loggia at Villa del Balbianello, with three arches twirled around with green vines overlooking the Lake and mountains. It was beautiful!
We took a bus from Como City to Lenno as the ferry was just not ferrying on wedding day.
Most of our friends stayed in Lenno so they came nearer to the time of the meet up for the Private Boat.
From what we found out, Villa del Balbianello is Lake Como’s most photographed villa, and we were fortunate to be able to walk around potentially areas where you might wouldn’t as a visitor.
Also James Bond was filmed here for Casino Royale. And unlike some Lake Como attractions that look better in photos than real life, this one somehow exceeds expectations.
If you plan on visiting Villa Del Balbianello, this guide covers everything about visiting Villa del Balbianello, tickets, opening hours, how to get there, what you’ll actually see, and whether it’s worth the planning required. Also will be recommending some tours and experiences along the way.

My experience visiting Villa del Balbianello
I like to start with my own personal experience of visiting Villa del Balbianello.
To be honest, I got the Villa wrong, and it was my own mistake of not reading the invitation properly. Hence why we stayed in Como City because we thought it was the villa closest to Como City.
Luckily we double checked albeit stupidly 2 days prior to my best friend wedding, the wedding is at Villa Del Balbianello.
As you know Lake Como has dozens of grand villas. Most are beautiful. Some are spectacular. And I have to admit Villa del Balbianello was just stunning.
I have no idea about this villa, and only then realised it was the location for James Bond and of course famously, Star wars! The beauty about being there for a wedding, you get to wander around the location quite privately.
What I do know is that the Villa does get quite busy during peak hours and season, and the nearest location to get here is via Lenno.
After the wedding, I came back as a regular visitor to see if the magic held up without the champagne and ceremony. It did. Villa del Balbianello is legitimately special, not just Instagram special.
For context on how it compares to other Lake Como villas and what else to see, my complete Lake Como guide breaks down the entire region.
Keep in mind that, English is spoken at times but the locals are not the best in English except maybe the big cities like Rome or Milan. Knowing a few local phrases make a huge difference when travelling. If you want to learn what people actually say, one-to-one tutoring with a native speaker helps more than apps.
I have used Preply, and you can book your trial lessons on Preply, you can try a lesson and decide for yourself.

How to Get to Villa del Balbianello
The villa sits on a small peninsula next to the village of Lenno on the western shore. You cannot drive to the villa itself. Once you are in Lenno, you either walk about 20 to 25 minutes uphill through the woodland path, or you take the taxi boat from Lido di Lenno directly to the villa’s private dock.
Take the boat. I know that sounds like a simple preference but it is genuinely the better experience and it costs seven euros return. The villa appears gradually as the boat rounds the peninsula, the towers and the loggia coming into view above the treeline with the lake on all sides. I had seen photographs of it a hundred times. The approach from the water was still a different thing entirely. Walking saves you seven euros and costs you that.
Getting to Lenno first
Most people reach Lenno by ferry from other towns on the lake. From Bellagio it is about 20 to 30 minutes. From Varenna you change at Bellagio and the total journey is around 45 minutes. From Como it is about 90 minutes by ferry or 30 to 40 minutes by car. My Varenna guide has the full ferry breakdown if you’re basing yourself there.
We took the bus from Como on the day of the wedding because the ferry was not running at the right time. The C10 bus from Como San Giovanni to Lenno takes about an hour along the western shore road. It is a perfectly good option if the ferry timing does not work out.

The taxi boat from Lido di Lenno
Small boats run between the Lido di Lenno waterfront and the villa dock roughly every 20 minutes during opening hours. The ride takes about 5 to 7 minutes. Seven euros return, no booking needed, first come first served. The boats are run independently, not by FAI, so they operate slightly separately from the villa ticket system.
During the wedding our group of eight took a private boat which the eight of us split for about 50 euros each. The captain did a slow approach from the south so everyone could take photos. I remember thinking as we came around the headland that the pictures I had seen had not quite captured the scale of it, the way the building rises above the trees with Bellagio visible across the water. That moment is the argument for arriving by water rather than on foot.
Walking from Lenno (20-25 Minutes)
The pedestrian path is about 1km, mostly uphill but paved. Anyone in reasonable shape can do it.
People walk when they’re budget-conscious, visiting in cooler weather, or genuinely enjoy short hikes. The path goes through woods on the peninsula, which is pleasant.
People regret walking when they see the villa from someone else’s boat and realize what they missed for €7.
The villa gardens themselves have stairs and steep sections regardless of how you arrive, so factor that in if mobility is a concern.
How to get tickets and book for Villa del Balbianello?
Villa del Balbianello requires advance booking. You can technically turn up without a ticket but in peak season you risk finding your preferred time slot full, and the queues at the entrance in July and August are real.
When I checked availability in February 2026 for July dates, the interior guided tour slots were already showing as sold out across multiple days. Gardens-only tickets had better availability but advance booking still makes sense just to skip the entrance line and guarantee your slot.
• Gardens only: 15 euros for adults. This gets you into the terraced gardens, the loggia, and all the viewpoints around the property. Most people do gardens only and do not feel like they missed anything.
• Villa interior guided tour: 24 euros total (an additional 9 euros on top of gardens). The tour takes 45 minutes in groups of 15 to 20 people. Interior tour slots have about 20 spaces per time slot, which is why they fill up weeks ahead in summer.
• Children 6 to 18: reduced rates, 11 euros for gardens. Under 6 free. Family ticket (2 adults plus 2 or more children) 42 euros.
You can book through the official FAI website at fondoambiente.it. Some third-party platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator offer combined ferry plus villa tickets which simplifies logistics if you are coming from Bellagio or Varenna. You pay slightly more but everything is sorted in one place. I would not tell you which to choose because it depends on whether you want the lowest price or everything pre-arranged. Both work.

What are the opening hours for Villa del Balbianello 2026
Villa del Balbianello opens seasonally. February-March has limited days (mostly weekends), then regular schedule starts late March through October.
Regular season (late March – October)
- Open daily except Mondays and Wednesdays
- Hours: 10am-6pm
- Last garden entry: 5pm
- Last interior tour: 4pm
November hours: 10am-5pm with earlier last entry
December: Limited opening, check the official website
The villa closes for private events and weddings, so verifying your specific date on the FAI website before traveling saves disappointment.
One thing I noticed at the wedding: the staff clear the public gardens by around 2pm on event days to prepare for the ceremony. If you are visiting during peak wedding season, booking a morning slot is the safer option regardless.
What you’ll see in Villa del Balbianello
The Gardens at Villa del Balbianello
The terraced gardens are what most people come for and they are genuinely exceptional. Paths wind through multiple levels, each one revealing a different angle on the lake. The holm oak trees have been pruned into those distinctive umbrella shapes over decades, creating shaded sections while framing the water below. The kind of garden maintenance that does not happen quickly.
The Loggia Durini is the place. Three arches looking out over the lake towards Bellagio and the mountains, with the floor inscription reading Fay ce que voudras, which means Do what you want, which was apparently the guiding philosophy of the villa. This is where the wedding ceremony was held, where the Star Wars scenes were filmed, and where approximately everyone who visits takes their photograph. It earned that.
There are quieter corners throughout the gardens with benches and lake views away from the main paths. During the wedding reception people kept disappearing into these spots with their drinks and I understood completely. Sometimes you want that view without anyone else in it.
Plan an hour and a half to two hours for the gardens at a relaxed pace. You could easily stay longer if you find a bench and just sit there for a while. Several people were doing exactly that when I visited the second time and it looked like the right idea.

The Villa Interior
The guided tour takes you through rooms containing Count Guido Monzino’s collection from his expeditions, including the first Italian ascent of Everest in 1973. Equipment, maps, photographs from his climbs. The library has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and wood panelling that I will admit I spent a longer time looking at than was strictly necessary.
Tours run 45 minutes, groups of 15 to 20 people, primarily in Italian with some English. The rooms explain themselves visually well enough that the language barrier is not a major issue. I found it interesting. If you are not particularly drawn to exploration history or historic interiors, the gardens alone give you the experience most people associate with this villa and the tour is not essential.
The film locations at Villa del Balbianello
Probably the most exciting part for us, as you probably know by now, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones was filmed here and they used the loggia and gardens for Anakin and Padmé’s romantic Naboo scenes.
Gutted we didn’t recreate the scene with Anakin and Padm, was bit busy with people at the time, and so awkward to be filming (for me anyway).
Oh and James Bond: Casino Royale featured the villa as Bond’s Lake Como recovery location after being poisoned. The gardens and boat dock appear in the movie.
Actually the villa doesn’t make a big deal about its film history. No plaques or markers saying “Star Wars filmed here” which I feel was nice, and they kept it showcasing the villa on its own as they should.
But if you’ve seen the films, you’ll recognize the locations instantly, which creates this odd moment of dejavu in a way.
For people who want to plan weddings at Villa Del Balbianello
The loggia seats about 100 people and the one thing you must know, the wedding stops at midnight, there is a rule in Italy apparently or so we were told! Which is a shame because it could have gone on till 3am considering the villa is situated on its own.
I think the Garden terraces accommodate larger gatherings. Weddings are booked through FAI directly at booking.balbianello@fondoambiente.it.
The villa closes to the public on wedding days, so your guests have the whole property. Weather contingency matters because the loggia provides some shelter but not complete cover. The wedding I attended had perfect weather, but I saw the staff preparing backup structures just in case.
I am going to write a full separate piece on the wedding experience because it deserves more than a paragraph. If that is what you are researching, keep an eye out for that one.

Is Villa del Balbianello worth visiting?
After visiting for a wedding and coming back as a regular visitor, it is the Lake Como villa I would prioritise if I could only see one. The setting is genuinely unlike anything else on the lake. The gardens are exceptional. The film history is a bonus rather than the point.
If you are spending at least two days on Lake Como, this belongs on day two of your western shore trip alongside Villa Carlotta. If you are only there for one day and based in Varenna, the ferry journey is manageable and worth doing. It is the kind of place you think about on the way home.
For first-time Lake Como visitors wondering which villas to see, I’d rank Villa del Balbianello number one in my eyes for location and gardens, Villa Carlotta is number 2 for size and spring flower displays, and Villa Monastero number 3 for its convenience and lakeside setting. All three are in my complete Lake Como guide with full details on how they compare.

FAQs About Villa del Balbianello
How do I get to Villa del Balbianello?
Take the ferry to Lenno from Bellagio (20 to 30 minutes) or Varenna via Bellagio (about 45 minutes total). From Lenno, take the taxi boat from Lido di Lenno dock to the villa for 7 euros return, running roughly every 20 minutes during opening hours. Alternatively, walk the 1km uphill path from Lenno, about 20 to 25 minutes. The boat is worth the 7 euros for the approach across the water.
Do I need to book Villa del Balbianello tickets in advance?
Yes, particularly for summer visits. Interior guided tour slots (about 20 people per slot) sell out weeks ahead in July and August. Gardens-only tickets have better availability but advance booking still saves you the entrance queue and guarantees your slot. Book at fondoambiente.it or through GetYourGuide for combined ferry and villa tickets.
Is the Villa del Balbianello interior tour worth it?
It depends on what you are there for. The tour covers Count Guido Monzino’s expedition collections, period furniture, and the library. Interesting if you enjoy exploration history or historic interiors. If you are primarily there for the gardens and the views, gardens only at 15 euros gives you everything most people associate with the villa and you can move at your own pace rather than in a group of 20.
Can you visit Villa del Balbianello with children?
Yes of course you can! What even is this question. You know your kids and teens the best. Though I do feel like strollers are impractical because of the stairs and steep paths throughout the gardens. Baby carriers are available to borrow at the entrance. Children 6 to 18 pay reduced entry at 11 euros. Under 6 is free.
Was Casino Royale filmed at Villa del Balbianello?
Yes. Villa del Balbianello appears in Casino Royale as Bond’s Lake Como recovery location after being poisoned. The gardens and the boat dock feature in the film. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones also used the loggia and gardens for the Naboo scenes between Anakin and Padme. The villa does not put up any plaques or markers about either, which I think is the right call.
Final thoughts on visiting Villa de Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello exceeded expectations even after seeing it at a wedding with perfect weather, champagne, and all the romantic elements that make any location seem magical.
The loggia where the ceremony happened, with its arches framing the lake and mountains, is one of the most beautiful architectural spaces I’ve encountered. Standing there as the sun set over Lake Como created a moment that justified all the advance planning required to visit.
For anyone planning Lake Como, I’d prioritize Villa del Balbianello over other villas. Book tickets once you have travel dates confirmed (especially for summer visits), take the boat taxi for the approach by water, allow 2-3 hours for exploration, and visit either early morning or late afternoon for the best experience.
The combination of history, film locations, spectacular gardens, and that unforgettable setting makes Villa del Balbianello essential Lake Como viewing.
When people ask what they absolutely shouldn’t miss on Lake Como, this villa is always my answer.
