Can You Get Married at Villa del Balbianello?
Well yes, otherwise we won’t be here. My friend’s wedding was at the Loggia Durini, the famous three-arched terrace looking out over the lake and mountains toward Bellagio.
The villa has been managed since the late 1980s by FAI, the Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which is Italy’s version of the National Trust, and weddings are one of the ways the foundation generates income to maintain the property.
It is absolutely possible to book but it is also in high demand, so it would be better to start your planning earlier and possibly the better your chances of getting the date you want.
My friend used a wedding planner in Italy, and while she was great, efficiency may or may not be as quick as you might like, so you might have to be a bit patient or get a super efficient one I suppose, but otherwise she was great in navigating everything to my friend.
This is what I have been told. The wedding was beautiful and thankfully proceeded without any issues.
But we did have to leave the premise at midnight as Villa del Balbianello has strict noise laws and we have to stop it at midnight which was a pity as it could have continued till 3 am.

What the Ceremony Space Feels Like at Villa Balbianello?
The loggia has three arches wrapped in green vines, with the lake and the mountains framed perfectly through each one.
There is a floor inscription that reads Fay ce que voudras, an old French phrase meaning do what you want, which was apparently the guiding philosophy of the villa’s former owner.
Being there for a wedding meant we got to wander areas of the gardens that a regular day visitor would not necessarily have the same access to, and the gardens themselves.
It was very serene, imagine the light music and violins playing the background, the sun setting but not quite yet, it was warm but was bit cooler as the night comes.
How Much Does a Villa del Balbianello Wedding Cost?
Probably the most important question in this entire article.
Ceremony Only Prices
From what I have researched, a ceremony at the Loggia Durini with up to 50 guests, the current 2026 base rate for a two hour rental is approximately 9,800 euros plus VAT for the venue hire, which works out to around 11,956 euros once VAT is added.
Chair hire is charged separately at around 10 euros plus VAT per chair, up to a maximum of 60 chairs.
Ceremony and Aperitif Costs
If you want a ceremony plus an aperitif afterwards, the minimum rental moves to three hours, with venue hire for over 50 guests priced at around 10,500 euros plus VAT, bringing the total closer to 12,810 euros before any catering, florals, or additional services are added.
For a full ceremony, aperitif, and reception package, which is a minimum six hour rental, FAI and the wedding planners who work with the villa generally require a direct enquiry for a precise quote, since pricing depends heavily on guest count, season, and day of the week.

These figures cover the venue hire only. Catering, florals, photography, music, and coordination are all separate costs on top.
Hidden Costs to Budget For
I do not know my best friend’s exact final number, and I never asked. But there are certain things before the wedding that I thought maybe was different to the UK.
Her hair trial was charged as a separate appointment on top of the wedding day styling itself.
The food tasting, where she and her now husband sat down to try the proposed reception menu before confirming it, came in at over 100 euros per person for the two of them, and that was a few years ago now so I would expect that figure to be different now.
And this was for each of the restaurants they tried by the way.
Full Reception Costs
One wedding planner I came across online quotes all-inclusive elopement packages built around an indicative venue fee of roughly 5,000 euros for no-reception version of a Villa del Balbianello wedding, though that figure comes from a single planner’s own pricing rather than from FAI directly, so treat it as one data point rather than a guarantee.
For a full day with a ceremony, reception, and evening celebration, the realistic total is significantly higher once catering, florals, photography, hair and makeup trials, and coordination are all added to the venue hire.
It would be best if you can confirm it directly with FAI or a Lake Como wedding planner but this is just to give you an idea.

What a Real Wedding Day at Villa del Balbianello Looks Like
I want to walk through how my friend’s day actually worked, since it gives a much clearer picture.
Private Boat Arrival
It was an afternoon wedding in peak summer time. We went to Lenno and waited at a specific area for the private boat to take all of us to the Villa Del Balbianello.
We then walked up to the Loggia area itself, passing by the tourists as we walked up. And seated ourselves at the Loggia and waited for the bride to arrive.
The Ceremony
They had their own wedding band with a wonderful singer serenading the bride as she walked down the aisle.
Afterwards, while the couple had their photographs taken around the grounds, while we moved down to the garden just below the loggia for an aperitif reception with drinks and a buffet, standing around in that incredible setting with the lake right there.
I mean we did spend majority of our time also taking pictures with one another especially up in the Loggia. The staff cleared the area of the seats very quickly.
Dinner and Reception
For dinner, the whole party moved to an indoor venue nearby on the property, with the dancing happening at the back of that same space later in the evening.
With the band set up and also a buffet for the desserts and the cake cutting was held there as well, in the outdoor space.
Oh and keep in mind there is no air conditioning in the indoor venue.

My friend had thought of this in advance and had handheld fans provided for guests, which sounds like a small thing until you are sitting indoors in Italy in summer in your wedding outfit. It was hot!
Also, outdoor amplified music at venues across Lake Como is restricted, with most local noise ordinances requiring outdoor sound to stop by midnight.
If you are picturing dancing until 3am under the stars, unfortunately you can’t, as the celebration simply wraps up once midnight hits as I mentioned before.
Unless you book an earlier time slot like a lunchtime slot maybe till midnight and have dinner earlier and account for a party session for several hours.
Booking the Date
As far as I know, weddings are booked through an enquiry process, and given how sought after the venue is, popular dates, especially weekends through the late spring and summer, can be booked out well over a year in advance.
If you have a specific date in mind, particularly a Saturday in June, July, or September, start the enquiry process as early as you possibly can.
Because the villa is a protected historical building, there are restrictions on what can be done in terms of decoration and structural changes, and FAI will want to work closely with you or your planner to make sure everything proposed respects the building’s heritage.
Most couples planning a wedding here work with a Lake Como based wedding planner rather than going through FAI entirely alone, since the planners are familiar with the villa’s specific requirements, the noise ordinance, the boat logistics, and the contact process, and can save a huge amount of back and forth.

How Guests Get to Villa del Balbianello
Generally, there are two ways to get to Villa del Balbianello, by boat or you walk uphill!
Private Boats
For my friends wedding, the Bride and Groom arranged a big private boat for all us including the Grooms party.
They stayed at a Villa in Lenno, and some of the guests stayed in the same hotel or nearby. Unlike myself who stupidly booked an airbnb in Como City, and had a hard time getting back at 1am but here we are.
The ride took approximately 15 to 20 minutes, to be honest, I was not paying attention, we were too busy chatting with everyone and just catching up really.
We did stop to take pictures and video as the boat is nearing Villa Del Balbianello.
It was so amazing to see the villa appears gradually as the boat comes and you can see the towers and the whole villa, it does look like something from a fairytale.
If you are planning your own wedding here, make sure to factor in private boat transfers into your guest logistics from the start.
Most wedding planners working on Lake Como weddings will arrange this as standard practice, coordinating boats from Lenno or from wherever your guests are staying, timed to arrive in groups so nobody is rushing or waiting around at the dock.
And all the guests will climb up to the Loggia, and yes, there are stairs and it was an uphill climb. And we were seated in the Loggia, while we wait for the bride to arrive.

Where Should Wedding Guests Stay?
Lenno itself has limited accommodation, so most wedding parties end up spreading guests across the surrounding towns. Mezzegra, Ossuccio, and Tremezzo are all close by on the western shore, and Como city, about 30 to 40 minutes by car, has a much wider range of hotels if your guest list is large and varied in budget.
If you are not staying in Lenno, make sure to get a taxi booked in for the when you get back to Lenno to take you back to your accomodation.
Don’t be like me, I was so close to just accepting we are sitting on a bench in Lenno till sunrise (we didn’t fortunately) thanks to a local taxi driver to took us back and we tipped him of course!
My Lake Como travel guide covers accommodation across the whole lake if you need to start mapping out where different groups of guests should stay.
Weather and the Best Time of Year to Get Married
The loggia provides some shelter with its arches but it is not a fully enclosed space, so weather contingency genuinely matters.
We were lucky, the wedding I attended had perfect weather, if you are booking here, ask directly what the wet weather plan looks like, since the answer will likely shape some of your other decisions, particularly around the reception if you are doing one on site.
Villa del Balbianello Wedding Tips From My Experience
Book your date as early as you possibly can, especially for a weekend in peak season.
Work with a wedding planner who has done weddings here before rather than trying to navigate FAI’s process alone.
Plan your guest transport by private boat rather than leaving people to figure out the public option on the day. Accept the midnight rule early in your planning rather than fighting it, and build your evening around it rather than against it.
Budget for the costs that sit outside the venue hire, the hair trial, the food tasting, which can run over 100 euros per person, and anything else your planner schedules as a separate appointment in the run-up to the day.
If your wedding falls in the warmer months, ask specifically how the indoor reception space handles heat, since there is no air conditioning in the indoor venue.
Handheld fans for guests are a simple, thoughtful fix, but it is the kind of detail you want sorted in advance rather than realised on the day.
And if budget allows, see if you can get access for photos earlier in the day before the ceremony, since the light on that loggia in the late afternoon is something else entirely.
FAQs About Villa del Balbianello Weddings
How much does it cost to get married at Villa del Balbianello?
Venue hire alone for a ceremony with up to 50 guests starts at around 9,800 euros plus VAT for a two hour rental in 2026, rising for longer rentals and larger guest counts.
That figure does not include catering, florals, photography, hair and makeup trials, or coordination, all of which add up separately.
How do I book a wedding at Villa del Balbianello?
Weddings are booked directly through FAI, the foundation that manages the villa. Most couples work with a Lake Como wedding planner who is familiar with FAI’s specific process, the noise restrictions, and the boat logistics, which simplifies the booking considerably.
Is there a noise curfew for weddings at Villa del Balbianello?
Yes. Outdoor amplified music is restricted in line with standard Italian and Lake Como noise ordinances, generally requiring outdoor sound to stop by midnight. This was the case for the wedding I attended and remains the case for 2026.
Is a Villa del Balbianello Wedding Worth It?
I have been to a fair number of weddings and I have never seen a setting quite like this one. Watching my best friend get married under those arches, with the water and mountains as the backdrop is truly magical.
I don’t think it’s an affordable venue per se, but definitely if your budget allows for it, it is a great consideration.
If you are planning the wider trip around the wedding, my Lake Como travel guide covers the towns, the ferries, and where to base your guests, and my Villa del Balbianello visitor guide is there for anyone in your wedding party who wants to come back and see the villa again as a regular visitor.
