Most people picture staying in Bellagio when they plan a trip to Lake Como, and rightfully so, the views, the waterfront hotels, the whole postcard experience. and if you trying to decide where to stay in Bellagio, you are in the right place.
Lake Como is a beautiful lake in Italy with many communes and towns dotted around Lake Como, and where you stay can greatly influence your experience as a first-time visitor or even a seasoned traveler.
I absolutely fell in love with Lake Como on my recent trip when I visited for my best friends wedding at Villa del Balbianello. Though as some of you might know, I made the mistake of staying way too far out in Como City, when I later found out other towns on Lake Como might have been better. And this meant a lot of my days were spent on ferries which you have to anyway but longer.
This guide will focus on where to stay in Bellagio in itself if you are keen to stay here, I will give you all the answers and hotel options you need for a fab time in the city, and I do have another post on the best things to do in Bellagio for later.

Should You Actually Stay in Bellagio?
I stayed in Como city and ferried to Bellagio and I do not regret it. Como city accommodation is significantly cheaper in July.
The slow ferry from Como to Bellagio takes about 90 minutes (there’s a fast one as well) and is one of the best things you can do on the lake anyway. If you are budget-conscious, read my full Lake Como cost breakdown before booking Bellagio accommodation.
Bellagio is a small town, and you can easily explore it in a few hours or half a day.
But if you want to wake up in Bellagio and have the town to yourself before the day visitors arrive (and it does get really busy), and to experience Lake Como fully then it is worth paying for.
Also by staying in Bellagio, you have space for parking as well, and also use the ferry to go around the famous towns around the Lakes such as Varenna which is only 15 mins by ferry, Lenno, Mennangio, Villa del Balbianello, Nesso and so on.
When to Stay in Bellagio?
- July and August are peak season. Crowded, expensive, and the ferry queues at the main dock are real. Worth it if the atmosphere is what you are after. Try and book everything few months ahead.
- May and early June are the sweet spot. Good weather, flowers everywhere, noticeably lower prices than July, fewer people on the streets. This is when Bellagio is at its most beautiful in my opinion.
- September is excellent. The summer crowds have thinned, the weather is still warm, and prices drop. This is when I would go back.
- October to March: many hotels and restaurants close. The lake is quiet and beautiful but much of what makes Bellagio Bellagio is closed this time. Some people love the off-season atmosphere. Better to base yourself in Como City during these times as it’s a bigger functioning city.
If you’re planning what to actually do once you’re there, I’ve mapped out the best experiences and hidden spots in my guide to things to do in Bellagio including exactly how I’d structure a day here.
Best Areas to Stay in Bellagio (Simple Breakdown)
The Waterfront (Lungolario)
The waterfront is Best for the full lake experience. This is where most first-time visitors want to be, and for good reason.
Hotels here sit directly on the promenade with the lake right outside. The ferry dock is steps away, meaning you can hop a boat to Varenna or Menaggio without planning your morning around transit.
It is the most central, the most convenient, and the most expensive part of Bellagio. If waking up to an actual lake view is the whole point of being in Bellagio, stay here. Just know the waterfront gets busy from mid-morning in July and the premium for that position is real.
Top Hotel Recommendations in Bellagio waterfront
Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni : I had to mention this one because it’s just too gorgeous not to. It is the ultimate luxury stay in Bellagio Lake Como, and I will be dreaming of the day I can stay in this beautiful hotel. You just have to check it out for yourself, and tell me all about it please!
Hotel Excelsior Splendide : A Bellagio hotel pick that is super stylish and new, with clean rooms, Lakefront views, free Wi-Fi. Great location steps from the ferry and also Bellagio town centre, and while it’s a little bit pricier than the other options, I think its worth it for the beautiful building, atmospher and amenities. The best-value lakefront hotel.
Hotel Du Lac : A classic, lovely stay right in a hotel that overlooks the main square. This feels like the kind of place you’d book when you want something dependable but still upscale. Rooms are comfortable with modern finishes, service is solid, and the location makes it easy to explore nearby shopping, and ferries, as a matter of fact, you can have breakfast here and watch the ferries go by.

The Historic Centre (Old Town)
This are is wonderful for its charm and walkability. The cobbled lanes, the staircases, the silk boutiques, the gelaterias, and this is the Bellagio that ends up in photographs.
Staying in the old town means you are embedded in the atmosphere rather than just visiting it. Via Garibaldi and the streets around Piazza Mazzini are the heart of it.
You are a short walk from the ferry and the waterfront but you are also in a slightly quieter part of town once the day visitors head home in the evening. This is where the mid-range family-run hotels like Hotel Florence and Hotel Du Lac sit. Good all-round choice.
Top Hotel Recommendations in Bellagio Old Town
Hotel Florence: Family-run hotel in the Old town of Bellagio, you could say the interior has the homely Italian charm with rustic decor but very charming. They also have a wellness area with sauna, hammam and hot tub, and a stunning terrace which is wonderful during warmer weather. And very central to the ferry as well.
Hotel Bellagio : Boutique hotel with more of a homely feel to it in regards to the decor, large rooms, and situated right in the centre of Bellagio. So convenient to be in the right of things and also walkable to the ferries. Also has a gym and a hot tub too. located in Bellagio’s city center with lovely views over Lake Como. Would say great for couples or friends.
Hotel Suisse : One of popular stays in Bellagio for its great value for the area. The rooms are modern and comfortable, and the location is pretty much cental Bellagio, putting you close to shopping, cafés, and easy ferry access. If you want a reliable, well-priced stay in Bellagio, this is a really solid choice.
Salita Monastero 1 Apartments: You can rent out an apartment in this building, honestly the location is right at the famous salita, the stairways in Bellagio. Also with stunning balcony views of the lake and also very central to the town and the ferry terminal.

The Hills Above Bellagio
Best for panoramic views and peace If you go up and Bellagio climbs steeply behind the town, you get the views that the waterfront hotels cannot offer.
Properties like Hotel Belvedere sit on the hillside with infinity pools, terraced gardens, and lake panoramas in every direction. The trade-off is that you are walking uphill to get home every evening.
Bellagio has almost no practical parking in the old town, so a car does not help much. Some hillside hotels offer a shuttle. If the view matters more than walking distance to the ferry dock, this is your area.
Top Hotel Recommendations in the Bellagio Hillside
Hotel Belvedere : If you want lake views, a pool, and something that actually feels special without going full luxury pricing.
Il Perlo Panorama: More affordable, still incredible views. They also provide a shuttle as well
Agriturismo Il Colle : Very close to Villa Melzi gardens, and it’s a unique property being a farm stay and they have gorgeous lake and mountain views. Modern yet rustic.

Pescallo
Best for quiet and authenticity A few minutes walk from the main square on the eastern side of the peninsula, it has its own small harbour, a handful of local places to eat, and almost none of the tourist bustle.
Apartments here offer some of the Bellagio experiences available. You feel like you are actually living somewhere rather than passing through. It is quiet enough that you would walk into town for dinner, which takes about 10 minutes.
Top Hotel Recommendations in the Bellagio Pescallo
Charming Bellagio Boutique Hotel : A very charming hotel witha pool and so close to the Lake shores (beach), and reminds me of the White Lotus hotel vibes somehow. Plus it is a 12-minute walk from the center of Bellagio and the ferry terminal.

San Giovanni
Best for budget and practicality San Giovanni is a small hamlet at the southern tip of the Bellagio peninsula, about 2 kilometres from the town centre along the lakeside road.
It has its own small port and beach, a few local restaurants, and accommodation that costs noticeably less than central Bellagio. If you have a car and do not need to be within walking distance of the ferry, it is a peaceful and affordable option.
Without a car the 2km walk along the lake is pleasant enough but factors into every day.

Hotel Borgo Le Terrazze: Located on the hill of Vergonese, in Bellagio. It has a beautiful Mediterranean garden and a swimming pool with an unforgettable view.

Which Bellagio Stay Is Actually Worth It? (Quick Decision Guide)
If you want the full Lake Como experience (and don’t mind the price):
→ Stay on the waterfront (look at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni or Hotel Du Lac)
If you want charm + location without paying luxury prices:
→ Old Town (Hotel Florence is your best bet)
If you want the BEST views on the entire lake:
→ Hillside (Hotel Belvedere and this is the sweet spot)
If you want quiet + authentic Bellagio:
→ Pescallo apartments
If you want to save money but still be close:
→ San Giovanni

Other Things to Know Before Your Trip to Bellagio Lake Como
- Bellagio is a restricted traffic zone. You cannot drive into the old town. If you are arriving by car, there are limited car parks on the edge of town and then you walk.
- The ferry from Como to Bellagio takes about 90 minutes on the slow boat. The fast hydrofoil takes about 45 minutes and costs slightly more. Plan your arrival time around the ferry schedule as not all services run at the same frequency.
- Most Bellagio hotels have no lift. If stairs are a concern, ask specifically when booking.
- The main square gets loud in the evenings in peak season. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room facing away from the waterfront.
Is Bellagio worth staying in rather than day tripping from Como?
Yes, if you want the early morning experience before the day visitors arrive, or if you want to ferry to other towns in the morning without a 90-minute journey first. No, if you are on a tight budget, Como city is significantly cheaper and the ferry is part of the experience anyway.
What is the best hotel in Bellagio?
Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is the best hotel by every objective measure. Hotel Belvedere is my personal pick for value within the luxury tier. Hotel Florence is the best mid-range option.
How far in advance should I book Bellagio hotels for summer?
At least 3 to 6 months for July and August. The good mid-range options such as Hotel Florence, Hotel Du Lac sell out months ahead in peak season. Do not leave it until spring for a summer trip.
Can I walk everywhere in Bellagio?
Yes. Bellagio is small. The ferry dock, the main square, the restaurants, and most hotels are all within a 10-minute walk of each other. You do not need transport within the town itself.
Final Thoughts
Choosing where to stay in Bellagio can feel overwhelming with so many surprisingly many areas in Bellagio considering how small it is, and also depends your budget of course.
I had actually based myself in Como City albeit was a mistake at the time due to not reading the invitation properly but I don’t regret it, and ferrying everywhere and taking the bus was quite reasonable.
The big bonus was the accommodation in Como is significantly cheaper, and the ferry ride is part of the experience anyway. If you’re trying to balance cost vs experience, read my full guide to Lake Como and how to plan it properly.
If I were to do it again, probably will, I am most likely going to budget to get a fancy hotel like Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni to experience it at least once and to have that waterfront experience.
Of course always work with your budget, and what type of trip you are after as well. Hope this guide has helped you.
