Champagne Afternoon Tea at Six Baltic Newcastle: Is It Worth the Hype?

29/06/2017 · In: Places to eat, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Afternoon tea is always a delicious and decadent treat, no matter where you are…..and finding a traditional one in Newcastle, UK with a view like this is a treat.

So if you are looking for afternoon tea in Newcastle Upon Tyne with incredible views? Six Baltic on the Quayside serves traditional afternoon tea on the sixth floor of the Baltic Centre with panoramic views across the Tyne. Here’s my honest review and everything you need to know.

I first visited Six Baltic back in 2017 with my besties to introduce my friend Fabiano’s mother (who was visiting from Brazil) to the very British tradition of afternoon tea. Google reminded me of this visit recently, and I realised it’s time to update this post because while the views are still incredible, quite a bit has changed at Six.

The restaurant reopened in February 2024 after a gorgeous refurb, earning two AA Rosettes and a spot in the Michelin Guide. The space is now even more stunning with modern interiors, a dedicated bar area, and that same breathtaking panoramic view that made me fall in love with it years ago.

In a Rush? Here are some great Hotels to stay during your Newcastle Stay

⭐⭐⭐ Motel One Newcastle – modern, city centre location, near Grey street, and pet friendly.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Maldron Hotel – Located about 10 minutes from the Stadium, it is near the Gate and also 2 minutes to Eldon Square.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sandman Signature Hotel – stylish, clean and central, and it’s next to the Stadium itself and the Stack is opposite, plus Shark bar is connected.

⭐⭐⭐ Kabannas Newcastle – Clean, simple, hostel with choices of sharing and individual and nice vibes from what I was told, and about 20 minutes walk to the stadium(depends how fast you walk)
⭐⭐⭐ Easy Hotel Newcastle – clean, modern, simple, some has windows and some don’t, they have an accessible room too. By the Quayside, about 10 mins to the monument.

Why Six Baltic is Special

Six sits on the sixth floor (hence the name!) of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, right on Newcastle’s Quayside. The building used to be the Rank Hovis flour mill before being transformed into a gallery in the 1990s, and it’s an imposing presence on the riverside that you genuinely can’t miss.

The Newcastle Quayside has evolved so much over the years. What was once an industrial area is now the hub for culture, nightlife, cafes and restaurants, with The Sage, the Millennium Bridge, and the Baltic all within walking distance.

To get to Six, cross the Millennium Bridge from Newcastle Upon Tyne side (one of the seven bridges along the Tyne!), enter the Baltic, and take the lift to the top floor. As the lift rises, you’ll pass art lovers getting off at different floors to explore the galleries. Then the doors open on the sixth floor, and boom – floor-to-ceiling windows with views for days.

The Space: Light, Airy & Seriously Impressive

The decor is tasteful yet simple with a deep natural colour featuring tones of green, wood and marble-style furnishings. Of course, the main selling point is the view through those massive floor-to-ceiling windows.

Natural light floods the space, making it feel fresh and open.

The vibe feels upmarket without being stuffy. It’s somewhere I’d save for special occasions, date nights, or when visitors come to Newcastle and I want to show off the city.

Speaking of date nights, Six is brilliant for romantic dinners with that view. Just saying!

Afternoon Tea at Six Baltic: What’s Included

When we first visited in 2017, afternoon tea came beautifully presented on the classic three-tier stand. The setup is still the same in 2025, though the menu changes seasonally to showcase the best local ingredients.

Current Afternoon Tea Menu (2025):

Bottom Tier – Sandwiches:

  • Free range egg and cress on white bread
  • Cucumber and chive cream cheese finger sandwiches
  • Ham and English mustard (when we visited)
  • Selections change seasonally

Middle Tier:

  • Freshly baked fruit scones (still warm when they arrive!)
  • Thick clotted cream
  • Strawberry jam

Top Tier – Sweet Treats: Recent reviews mention:

  • Raspberry Victoria sponge
  • Chocolate and praline choux bun (oozing with cream!)
  • Lemon and pistachio trifle
  • Bannoffee pie with rich toffee sauce

When I visited years ago, we had chocolate brownie with salted caramel, lemon posset with pink grapefruit jelly, white chocolate and lime pavlova, and hazelnut financier. All absolutely delicious.

The Scones Deserve Special Mention

The scones arrive warm on the middle tier, and honestly, they’re always my favourite part of any afternoon tea. You can’t beat a proper scone with clotted cream and jam, washed down with a cup of English breakfast tea.

There’s also mature cheddar scones on some menus.

The menu changes according to the season but nevertheless the traditional tea with scones is what we were after. We came here to introduce afternoon tea to my friend, Fabiano mother who was visiting from Brazil.

When my friends and I visited back in 2017, we upgraded to champagne because life’s more fun with bubbles, don’t you think? The champagne option is still brilliant value for what you get.

Afternoon Tea Prices 2025

Classic Afternoon Tea: £27 per person Prosecco Afternoon Tea: £32 per person
Champagne Afternoon Tea: £37 per person (Laurent Perrier)

When is Afternoon Tea Served?

Saturdays: 2pm – 3pm Sundays: 12pm – 3pm

Book ahead, especially for weekends. You can reserve through OpenTable or by calling the restaurant directly.

The Tea Selection

Six uses Rington’s tea (a proper Newcastle company!), and there’s a full selection to choose from including:

  • English Breakfast
  • Earl Grey
  • Lemon and Ginger
  • Peppermint
  • And more

The tea is loose leaf and genuinely very good quality. Plus it’s unlimited, so you can have as many refills as you fancy.

Coffee is available too if you prefer.

We started off with sandwiches – cucumber, egg and cress and ham and English mustard following with mini mushroom and leek quiches and this was so good, I could have had 3 of those! Topped off with freshly baked fruit scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam (my favourite).

What Else Can You Do at Six Baltic?

While afternoon tea is brilliant, Six offers loads more:

Sunday Roast: £38 for two courses, £45 for three courses. Served family-style in their exclusive Viewing Box. Traditional roast with all the trimmings, chef-crafted canapés, and dessert.

Tasting Menu: Six course tasting experience in the main dining room with wine pairings. Proper fine dining.

Bottomless Brunch: Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-2pm. One course plus 90 minutes of free-flowing prosecco or beer.

Regular Menu: Modern British cuisine using seasonal local produce. Changes regularly.

Cocktails: The bar serves innovative cocktails including five different espresso martinis (classic, Toblerone, caramel, tiramisu, white chocolate raspberry!). They also do a Thirlings Negroni, English Pimm’s spritz, and Northumbrian Iced Tea.

Other Baltic Attractions: Why not explore the art galleries while you’re here? The Baltic Centre has free entry and rotating contemporary art exhibitions across multiple floors.

Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible via lift. Call ahead if you need specific seating arrangements.

Is Six Baltic Worth It?

Absolutely. Six’s restaurant promises ‘breathtaking panoramic views with great food, great service, and a great experience’ and I have to admit that we found that they lived up to that promise.

Our Brazilian guest loved it, particularly the mini quiches. The whole experience felt special without being pretentious.

For £27-37 depending on your drink choice, you get generous portions, quality ingredients, unlimited tea or coffee, and genuinely one of the best views in Newcastle. That’s brilliant value compared to London afternoon tea prices!

The service is professional and friendly. Staff are happy to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies, and they’ll make a fuss for special occasions if you mention it when booking.

It is such a treat to have an afternoon tea. Our guest enjoyed herself and her favourite was the mini quiche.

I honestly can’t blame her, it was delicious.

Other Afternoon Tea Options in Newcastle Upon Tyne

While Six Baltic is my top pick for views, Newcastle has other brilliant afternoon tea spots:

  • Vermont Hotel (Castle views from their Afternoon Tea Lounge)
  • Jesmond Dene House (Country house setting just outside city centre)
  • Fenwick (Traditional department store afternoon tea)

But none can compete with Six’s panoramic riverside views in my opinion!
